The Abomnibus Immigration Reform

I'm going to try to avoid politics around here if I can, but a potentially severe problem has crossed my mind recently that I have yet to hear brought up by any talking heads on either side of the issue. It may be that no one is thinking this far ahead, or it's something no one wants to bring up for fear of giving anyone ideas.

How does the Mexican government react? They've been complicit in the mass exodus of their poverty class for years now. They pass out maps, give out advice, and even provide bus rides to the border in some cases. If this amnesty bill as allowed to become law, you can expect the Mexican government to redouble their efforts.

But what if the people demanding a secured border and no permanent or temporary legal status get their way? The number of people who would support massive roundups and deportations is so vanishingly small as to make any such program impossible. The key word you hear begin thrown about is "attrition." Begin going after employers, denying social services, and allow local law-enforcement to arrest those they come across here illegally, and the illegals will eventually suck it up and go home on their own.

Here's the problem I see. Mexico isn't going to want them back. Mexico went to great pains to send them over here. The nightmare scenario is that Mexico decides to seal the border to south-bound traffic and deny their own citizens reentry. Now we have 12-20 million people in some kind of geo-political limbo (and stuck on our side of the line no less). We don't want them, and Mexico won't take them back.

Now what?

1 I've always favored repatriating people caught trying to cross the border on the Yucatan peninsula. It's part of Mexico, right? ;p

Seriously, how is Mexico supposed to seal the border against us? Military force? (snort)

It's the Yucatan, or we could drop them off at an airstrip in Panama and let them try to get back into Mexico from the south. I hear that's no picnic.

Well, we're not talking about preventing a military invasion, just the Mexican government blocking the re-entry of Mexican citizens they suspect are coming back from an extended stint on the American dole.

3 Yeah, but Panama's another country, no? No reason to dump people on -them-...

I'm curious how the Mexican government would block that re-entry, though. What, are they going to line up police at the border to keep their own citizens out? That'd make for great TV...

Put them all in Hawaiian shirts, give'em a disposable camera, and the Panamanians won't know the difference until it's too late.

I can see the Federales clamping down tight on the south-bound traffic. They don't seem nearly so concerned with their international image as some people on our side of the border. It makes me curious what back-room chatter may be going back and forth with Mexico.
